Log Cabin Republicans pick Patrick Sammon as new president

The Log Cabin Republicans, the national organization of gay members of the GOP, has announced that Patrick Sammon has been promoted to president of the organization, PageOneQ has learned. Sammon was chosen from among six candidates who were interviewed said Log Cabin Board Chairman Tim Schoeffler in a conference call with chapter leaders earlier today.

The organization will make an official announcement at 11 EST.

Prior to the appointment, Sammon was Executive Vice President of the Liberty Education Forum, the non-profit arm of the Log Cabin organization. During his three years at LEF, Sammon worked on programs like Reaching The Heartland and the organization's efforts against Don't Ask, Don't Tell. The Reaching The Heartland program works to gain support for lesbian and gay issues in what the site terms "conservative red states throughout the Middle American Heartland and South."

Before his work at Log Cabins, Sammon worked as a television reporter at CBS affiliates in Tennessee and upstate New York. During the call, Schoeffler remarked on Sammon's media experience and how that would benefit the organization. Sammon also worked at Manifold Productions, a company which produces documentaries. In 1994, Manifold released a film, Hollywood vs Religion, which starred James Dobson and Chuck Colson. Dobson is head of Focus on the Family and Colson, one of seven who served time in jail for his role in the 1973 Watergate scandal, is founder of Prison Fellowship, a conservative Christian organization. The film focused on what it claimed was Hollywood's bias against Jews and Christians and was narrated by conservative radio host Michael Medved.

The position of Log Cabin President had previously been held by Patrick Guerriero, who led the organization since January of 2003. Guerriero had served three terms as an openly gay member of the Massachusetts legislature where he was a state representative. He also served two terms as mayor of Melrose, MA. Currently, Guerriero now heads the Gill Action Fund.
