Nick Cargo A talk radio host, railing against the President-elect, claimed without basis that allowing gays to serve openly in the military would increase their colleagues' risk of contracting HIV. According to KOA's "Gunny" Bob Newman and a "military doctor" that called in to his show on January 7, openly gay servicemembers, "more and more" of which would join the military under President-elect Obama's plan to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," will pose a health risk and possible "death sentence" to military medics and their compatriots if, for example, an HIV-positive soldier's blood is transfused into another in an emergency combat situation. "This doesn't bother Barack Obama," Newman charged. "It doesn't faze him in the least. He doesn't care if a soldier or a Marine or a SEAL or what have you gets HIV, becomes HIV-positive, and then develops AIDS and dies because he happened to get a transfusion from an, say, an openly gay person with a very active sexual, open lifestyle. "Because to Obama, what's most important is two things, being politically correct -- excuse me, three things: being politically correct; functioning as a good leftist; and number three, paying back the gay and lesbian lobby, which donated such staggering sums of money to his campaign. He owes them a lot of money." What Newman omits is that an applicant for military service is tested for HIV and barred from serving if found to be HIV-positive. Active members of the military are tested for HIV every two years, and those who test positive while on active duty are barred from serving outside the United States as well as being designated as "donor ineligible" in their medical records, specifically ordered not to donate organs, blood or other body fluids or tissues. Audio of Newman's January 7 segment and more information are available at Colorado Media Matters.
