Stephen Colbert denies the gayness of his home state, South Carolina

by PageOneQ

"I am flaming," a satirical Stephen Colbert told his audience.

"Flaming mad at a new ad campaign aimed at gay tourists that appeared on the London subway."

"Thankfully, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford," he went on, "had the courage to have the campaign pulled. And that was not an an easy thing to do because there was a lot of bureaucracy between the Governor and the guy who placed the ad. So, in the end, the Governor had to reach around to yank it."

Governor Sanford, on hearing of the "South Carolina is So Gay" campaign in conjunction with British travel agency Amro Worldwide, ordered a department head to "do the right thing personnel-wise or process-wise to ensure this does not happen again," Q-Notes reported July 16. Sanford, perceiving an attempt to further an "agenda," objected to the campaign on the basis that it was "aimed at a specific group of people," and refused to pay the $4,942.50 in advertising fees to ad agency TTM World.

The board of the South Carolina Pride Movement, in response, will raise the money to pay the bill for the ad, which was made for London Pride Week.

"South Carolina is a masculine state," Colbert insisted of his home state. "It is very butch. It is where big, strapping straight men reenact Civil War battles, then shower together, for historical accuracy."

The video clip below was aired on Comedy Central's The Colbert Report on July 22, 2008.
