What did Barney say to Bush? Blitzer asks about CT lawmakers and men kissing men

by PageOneQ

CNN's Jeanne Moos picked up some interesting dialogue between openly gay Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA) and President Bush on Monday night.

Nicknames were called out and high-fives abounded as President Bush greeted colleagues on the way to deliver his last State of the Union speech.

As the Boston Globe recaps, Bush swept in to give his regards to the person on the other end of Rep. Frank's line as he spoke on the phone. After the speech, Frank let the President know that it was his boyfriend, to which Bush replied: "Good, I'm glad. I'm sure he'd appreciate an open-minded guy like me."

"Next thing you know," segues Moos to a shot of Rep. Christopher Shays (R-CT) showing his manly affection, "a guy will be kissing President Bush."

Video and transcript follow below, as broadcast on CNN's The Situation Room on January 29, 2008.

MOOS: The president also joshed around with openly gay Congressman Barney Frank after Frank brought up his boyfriend.

REP. BARNEY FRANK (D), MASSACHUSETTS: It was my boyfriend.

BUSH: Good. I’m glad.

FRANK: (INAUDIBLE).

BUSH: I’m sure he’d appreciate an open-minded guy like me.

FRANK: I told him that. Absolutely.

MOOS: All this touchy feely stuff next thing you know, a guy will be kissing President Bush.

MOOS: Whoa!

Did you see that?

Republican Congressman Christopher Shays gave the pres a peck. The last time something similar happened, Senator Joe Lieberman’s opponents used it against him. And already, Shays’ opponent has posted the kiss to YouTube as if it’s the kiss of death.

Forget the State of the Union—it’s the state of their union and their union that seduces the press.

BLITZER: There must be something about those Connecticut lawmakers—Chris Shays, Joe Lieberman and the kiss with the president. Only Jeanne Moos has these reports and we feature her here in THE SITUATION ROOM.
