Pridelets for Tuesday, June 19

by Thomas Allen Heald

ON THIS DAY
Okay, so who's the best person to adopt a thirteen-year-old boy? On this day in 1977, A New York State judge decides that it's ... not just an openly gay man and his partner ... but an openly gay minister at that. The stated reason for granting permanent custody after a one year battle to raise the Father's new son? Says the court: "I'm not trying to get into new avenues. I'm just trying to deal with this one matter before me. I assume some people will be critical, but look at it this way: The man doesn't beat his son, and when you look at all the cases of child abuse you get from so-called straights, you grasp for words." BIRTHGAYS (and the occasional straights)
1566 - England's King James I (pictured), responsible for the current "version" of the Bible
1941 - Julia Penelope Stanley, co-founder of the lesbian/gay caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English, co-author of "Coming Out Stories," and a professor of linguistics at the University of Nebraska
1953 - "Why We Never Danced The Charleston" author Harlan Greene
Q.UOTE
"Surgeon General nominee James W. Holsinger's, 'Pathophysiology of Male Homosexuality,' proves that 'male homosexuality is not only unnatural but a threat to public health.'I say we get this guy appointed and let him do for homosexuality what previous surgeon generals have done for smoking. For years, we have tolerated smoking, just like we currently tolerate homosexuality, but the surgeon general alerted us to the dangers of smoking with warning labels. With Holsinger at the helm, we can use the same approach for homosexuality. Every gay man and woman should come with a label." -- Comedian Stephen Colbert
