On February 7, forty-four members of Congress wrote to US Secretary of State Conodeelezza Rice seeking her explanation of why the United States voted to block lesbian and gay groups from observer status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

The United States sided with Iran and Sudan in the vote.
