Former Senator argues that gays in the military make better soldiers

by David Edwards and Mike Sheehan

Via Raw Story - Former U.S. senator Mike Gravel, 2008 Democratic presidential candidate, makes an appearance on Comedy Central's Colbert Report. Host Stephen Colbert shows a clip of Gravel's memorable appearance at the first Democratic debate, then jokingly refers to the fringe candidate as a "crackpot."

"You're a little bit behind in the polls," Colbert quips. "The USA Today poll has you running neck-and-neck [at 1%] with 'Someone else.'"

"If you can get me to double-digits," retorts Gravel, "I would consider you as vice presidential material."

In the interview, Gravel offers an argument that gays make the best soldiers and that the Don't Ask, Don't Tell ban on military service should be lifted.
