A coalition of over forty organizations led by the American Family Association has written to Ford Chairman Bill Ford asking the motor company's executives to "stop funding either side in the cultural war." Their action was a direct response by Ford management to continue supporting events and advertising in the lesbian and gay community.
In the letter to Ford, released by the American Family Association today, the group's president, Donald Wildmon, claims that unnamed representatives of Ford made verbal commitments to the organization. According to a statement released by the AFA, those agreements were:
1. Ford would not renew current promotions or create future incentives that give cash donations to homosexual organizations based on the purchase of a vehicle.
2. Ford would stop giving cash and vehicle donations or endorsements to homosexual social activities such as Gay Pride parades.
3. Ford would not make corporate donations to homosexual organizations that, as part of their activities, engage in political or social campaigns to promote civil unions or same-sex marriage.
4. Ford would cease all advertising in homosexual websites and media outlets (magazines, television, radio) in the U.S. with the exception of a small amount to be used by Volvo. The Volvo ads would be the same ads used in the general media and not aimed at the homosexual community specifically.
In the letter, Wildmon told the Ford Chairman, “We can not, and will not, sit by as Ford supports an agenda aimed at the destruction of the family.”
The letter demanded a reply from the company before January 20 and indicated that if a reply is not received by that date that, "[W]e will assume that Ford does not intend to honor its representations to AFA. The letter went on to request that should company reply, that they do so in writing, as, according to Wildman, the group "can no longer trust Ford to keep its verbal word."
The letter and included Beverly LaHaye, founder of
Concerned Women for America (CWA) as a signator. LaHaye's
son, Lee, is the closeted
Chief Financial Officer of the organization. Additional
signators include: Alan Chambers, president of "ex-gay"
organization Exodus International; James Dobson of
Focus on the Family and Tony Perkins, president of
the Family Research Council.
Representatives of PageOneQ's calls to the American Family Association went unreturned. The group's written statement included the notation that no additional comments will be made at this time.
